About the specialisation

Documentary Filmmaking Courses

Documentary filmmaking courses at Prague Film Institute are designed for filmmakers who need to handle multiple roles on real shoots. Documentary crews are rarely large — one person often covers several responsibilities at once. That’s why strong foundations across all filmmaking departments are essential. You’ll learn camera, sound, directing, editing and production basics, building the versatility every documentarian needs.

Alongside this all-round training, you’ll also have dedicated documentary classes, practical assignments and real documentary shoots. As your final film, you’ll create your own documentary project, putting all these skills into practice.

Versatile Filmmaking

Develop strong foundations in camera, sound, directing, editing and production — essential because documentary crews are small and filmmakers often take on multiple roles.

Understanding your study path

documentary filmmaking in our courses

1-Month & 3-Month Courses

You don’t choose a specialisation yet. Everyone learns the same core filmmaking skills, which is especially valuable for future documentarians.

Documentary Experience

  • You don’t take documentary classes yet — instead you build universal filmmaking foundations across cinematography, directing, editing, production and screenwriting.

Final Film

  • You will take a role in the final group film. The project may be documentary if the team chooses that direction — a great opportunity to experience how small, versatile crews work in practice.

Next Step

  • → Continue to the 1-Year Beginner Filmmaking Program

This course is not designed for aspiring documentarians. It focuses mainly on cinematography and camera-related training, with only minimal overlap with documentary practice.
